We meet for coffee at 9.30am between Areeiro and Alvalade, in the northern part of Lisbon, and then go for an informal walk along the back alleys and side streets of Alvalade to learn about the history of this 'new town' planned by Salazar's dictatorship in the late 1930s and 1940s and mostly built during the 1940s and 1950s. We then head back to the Roma-Areeiro train station (2nd coffee break along the way) to take the Sintra-bound train to one of Greater Lisbon's most strikingly hurried 1960s and 70s suburban towns, where we wrap up with lunch and a hygienic post-lunch spin around a couple of its more interesting spots. After the walk's concluded, you can either return to Lisbon with the rest of the group or take the opportunity to get back on the train and head to Sintra.

To join, you must be 18 or older, or be accompanied by an adult if younger. You must also be able to walk for long periods.

A half-day(ish) walking and public transport circuit of Alvalade and a northwestern satellite town halfway along the Sintra railway line. Lunch and a couple of coffee breaks all included, plus I'll send you a digital kit the next day with references, biblio, some follow-up info on the places we've been to, suggestions of other heterodox sites to visit around Greater Lisbon, etc. Do bring your sketchbook, notebook, camera, what you normally carry with you when going for a long walk...

Next walks 30 April and 7 May

Book for the 30th of April or the 7th of May (minimum 2 pax, max. 5). In the unlikely event that I have to reschedule due to bad weather, I will contact everyone with a couple of alternative dates. If those are impractical for you, I will refund you the booking fee in full. If a minimum of two pax cannot join or the weather's not likely to improve anytime soon, I will cancel the walk and will refund everyone's deposit fully.

Meeting point in the corner between Av. Frei Miguel Contreiras and Av. de Roma, by the entrance to the Roma-Areeiro train station (with Hotel Roma facing us across the street) at 9.30am. I will send everyone my phone number, a few tips about how to recognise me and a pin of my exact location on the day. You can always call me if you're having trouble finding the meeting spot.
